Beautiful, tanned skin in a lovely shade of chocolate is the object of desire for many of us. Especially during the holiday season, there is an increased interest in sunbathing – beaches and squares are occupied by lovers of sunbathing, but also tanning salon cannot complain about the lack of clients. Meanwhile, not everyone is aware of the fact that tanning can end … not so well. What should you do if you get unpleasant skin discoloration in the form of streaks, spots and stains as a souvenir from your vacation in sunny Hurghada?
Where do these discolorations come from?
Such spots and stains on your skin are discoloration after sunbathing. They appear due to disturbances in the production of melanin (dye) in the skin. The melanin is responsible for the intensity of skin coloration, normally it darkens your skin under the influence of the sun. The discoloration is usually brown, but when there is a melanin deficiency – the spots are white. They are only a cosmetic defect, they occur mainly in those places of the body exposed to the sun’s rays. The causes of discoloration can be different:
- Taking certain hormonal medication
- Use of hormonal contraception
- Pregnancy
- Taking certain medications (e.g. sulfonamides, antifungal and anti-diabetic agents, diuretics, beta-blockers, tetracyclines, cytostatics, NLP)
- Alcohol consumption
- The use of cosmetics containing phototoxic substances on the skin, i.e. those that interact and leave marks under the influence of UV rays (e.g. alcohol in perfumes or perfumed creams, retinol, fruit acids, bergamot oil)
- Some skin conditions (e.g. lupus)
What treatments do we apply to imperfections after sunbathing?
Cavitation peeling – removing discoloration after tanning with ultrasound
We have already mentioned the cavitation peeling several times, but when discussing removing discoloration, it’s also worth remembering. It is a sensational way to remove discoloration after tanning. Cavitation allows ultrasonic waves to penetrate deep layers of the skin, removing dead or abnormal cells from them, and accelerating the metabolism of healthy cells. Vibration causes increased blood and lymph flow, lymphatic drainage causes intensive oxygenation of the skin and its regeneration. To have a permanent effect, it is recommended to perform cavitation peeling once a week for a period of about 5-6 weeks, but at least once a month. See the detailed offer of cavitation peeling.
Diamond microdermabrasion
Just like in the case of discoloration after acne, microdermabrasion helps to eliminate discoloration after sunbathing. Using diamond tips the upper layer of epidermis is mechanically peeled and stimulated during the procedure – natural skin tissue reconstruction processes are triggered, which results in the appearance of new smooth skin. Improved skin tone, activated fibroblasts produce collagen and elastin, thanks to which the new tissue layers are elastic and smooth. Skin regeneration covers the entire area treated. Sun discoloration and photoaging symptoms disappear, the skin acquires an even & healthy color.
Contraindications for the procedure are active purulent or bacterial skin infections, mycosis, cavernous hemangiomas, tendency to form keloids, purulent acne and vascular skin. See the detailed offer of diamond microdermabrasion.
Acid exfoliation- chemical peels
Acid treatments or chemical peels are also a proven way to remove discoloration after tanning. Preparations for this treatment are selected individually for each client, observing the safety rules.
Exfoliation, i.e. removing discoloration after tanning with the help of acids, can also be done in the summer, thanks to the use of monoacids that are safe for the skin and do not react with UV rays. These are as follows: mandelic, malic, phytic, azelaic, shikimic, ascorbic and lactobionic acids. Phytic acid is quite interesting – it’s molecules have the property of blocking copper ions, which is responsible for the melanogenesis process in the skin. In turn, shikimic acid very effectively affects the effects of photoaging, accelerating its regeneration. See the detailed offer of treatments using acids- chemical peels.
Kojic acid treatments – chemical peel
Kojic acid from Asia has taken European beauty salons by storm. In Asia, it has been used for centuries for making skin care products. In beauty salons, it is used as an effective way to remove discoloration after tanning.
Kojic acid penetrates the skin and inhibits the melanin formation process, which in turn triggers the process of depigmentation of dark spots. No new stains are created. Kojic acid has the enormous advantage over other acids that it does not exfoliate intensively and does not require skin protection from the sun. Therefore, it can also be used in the summer without fear. See which chemical peels we use.
